What we’re building
Using AI to make real things.
A society for making things with AI tools like ChatGPT and Claude.
- You describe it in plain English. The AI handles a lot of the technical side, and you end up with something real that works.
- Using AI to build, not building AI. No heavy maths, no research papers, no lectures.
- You don’t need to code. Beginners are genuinely welcome.
What you get out of it
- A skill employers want. UK employers rank using AI well among the skills they want most. Not coding: knowing what to ask for, and checking what comes back.
- A portfolio of real projects. Things you built yourself, for your CV and placement applications.
- People to build with. From every course and every year.
Register interest
A bit about you.
Registering isn’t a commitment. It’s how we show the Students’ Union that people want this.
Questions
Still got questions?
Do I need to know how to code?
No. Some members write code every day and some have never opened a terminal. Sessions are built so both get something out of them.
What are AI coding tools?
Most people have only used ChatGPT or Claude to ask questions. AI coding tools like Claude Code and Codex go further: you describe what you want in plain English, and they write the code, create the files and fix the errors for you. That’s how people with no coding background are building real websites, apps and tools. You still decide what gets made and check that it works, and that’s the part we practise in sessions.
Do I have to be a Computer Science student?
Not at all. Any course, any year, including Masters and PhD students. Some of the best things get built by people who came at it from a completely different subject.
Is this an official society yet?
Not formally, no. We’re going through the Students’ Union process now, which is exactly why this page asks you to register interest rather than to join. Numbers are a big part of what gets a society approved, so putting your name down genuinely helps it happen.
Does it cost anything?
Registering costs nothing and neither does turning up. If a membership fee comes in once we’re approved, you’ll hear about it well before you’re asked to commit to anything.
Do I need to pay for Claude or ChatGPT?
You don’t have to, but it genuinely helps. A paid plan runs around £20 a month and gets you noticeably further in a single session. The free tiers do work. You just hit the limits sooner, so you get less done in one sitting. Plenty of people will be on them and nobody is getting turned away for it.
I filled the form. What happens next?
You get a link to join the group chat straight away, and that’s where session details and updates go out. If you’d rather not use WhatsApp, email me and I’ll keep you posted that way.
